USSSA. PGF. USA Softball. NSA. Triple Crown. If the alphabet soup of travel softball sanctioning bodies confuses you, you're not alone. Here's what each one actually is — and which ones matter for your team.

What a Sanctioning Body Actually Does

Sanctioning bodies are the organizations that govern travel tournaments: they set rules, classify teams, insure events, and run championship tournaments. Teams "register" with a body, and tournaments are "sanctioned" by one. A team can (and often does) play events from multiple bodies in the same season.

USA Softball (formerly ASA)

USSSA

If you're playing in Georgia and the Southeast, USSSA events will likely be your team's bread and butter.

PGF (Premier Girls Fastpitch)

Triple Crown Sports

NSA, TCS, USA, and Others

NSA (National Softball Association) and various regional bodies fill out the calendar with solid local events. There's nothing wrong with them — just know what level of competition a given event typically draws.
