Here's the uncomfortable truth about travel softball tryouts: most coaches have a good idea who they're taking within the first 20 minutes. That doesn't mean tryouts are rigged — it means coaches are evaluating things your player can control before she ever fields a ground ball.

Here's what they're actually watching, and how to prepare.

What Coaches Evaluate First (Before Skills)

1. How she carries herself

Coaches watch players arrive. Does she jog onto the field? Introduce herself? Look the coach in the eye? A player who sprints to her station and hustles between drills is already on the shortlist. Hustle is the one skill that requires zero talent — and coaches notice its absence instantly.

2. How she responds to failure

Your player will boot a ground ball or swing through a rise ball. Coaches know it. What they're measuring is the next 10 seconds: does she drop her head and pout, or reset and attack the next rep? Body language after mistakes is one of the top "cross-off" triggers at every age level.

3. Whether she's coachable

When a coach gives a correction, does she apply it on the very next rep? Coaches would rather take a B-level athlete who implements feedback instantly than an A-level athlete who's uncoachable. This is the single most underrated tryout skill.

The Skills That Actually Get Measured

Formats vary, but most travel tryouts evaluate the same core set:

Wear solid softball pants and a plain shirt — not last season's rival team jersey. Coaches notice, and not in a good way.

If She Doesn't Make It

A rejection email is a redirect, not a verdict. Ask the coach for one piece of honest feedback (most will give it), keep developing, and try out elsewhere.
